’Beyond the Pill’ Will Make You Rethink Your Birth Control

The birth control pill is great for three reasons. There’s the obvious fact that it helps prevent pregnancy if that’s not your thing, or if you’re not ready. Most women have lighter, regular periods while popping the pill and it may clear up acne, too. So those are three really big issues! How rad! But it’s no secret that there are dozens of negative side effects that come with taking those glorious pills. I had no idea just how much havoc we put our body through until reading ‘Beyond The Pill’ by Dr. Jolene Brighten.

To put it simply, this content in this book is BATSHIT CRAZY. Readers will quickly learn that the pill not only causes hormonal confusion and depletes crucial vitamins and mineral reserves, but can increase the risk of diabetes, trigger autoimmune disease, promote inflammation and dysbiosis, and may cause pill-induced polycystic ovarian syndrome. Oh, if and when you decide to stop taking the pill, you may be hit with the lovely Post-Birth Control Syndrome. Is that some bullshit or what?! There’s a lot to digest in Dr. Brighten’s book. To be honest I have to read it again and take notes to really retain the information and advice in these pages. Half the book is admittedly scary. But the other half will give you tools to take control of your body again.

Dr. Brighten splits up ‘Beyond the Pill’ in three sections: issues with the pill, changes (or complete chaos) the body goes through while on the pill, and steps to ‘take back your body.’ Toward the end of the book, Dr. Brighten details alternative birth control methods and her ’30-Day Brighten Program,’ which is essentially a giant list of supplements that she sells. She also provides a comprehensive list of surprisingly easy recipes, which is the most fun part of ‘Beyond the Pill.’ So far I’ve tried the Creamy Strawberry Cauliflower Smoothie and Zucchini Turkey Burgers – both excellent! Since the pill is so detrimental to nearly every system in the body, taking a few supplements where you need it most (like a multivitamin or a liver cleanse powder) will be beneficial. But it’s nice to know that there’s a health expert who understands that all we really need is in the kitchen. So take her advice and put your money where your mouth is!
